Americans - fattest in the world?

It’s easy to figure out some of the reasons why. Technology is making it easier to be sedentary, from robotic vacuum cleaners and remote controls for everything, to all those labor-saving appliances and power tools that keep us firmly seated on the couch. Not to mention e-enabled jobs that keep us tied to cell phones, internet/intranet, and virtual global meetings at all times of the day and night, instead of finding time to exercise. It can be hard to resist these cultural trends.

American meal has grown in size and ease of availability. Fast foods, carryout, delivery, drive up -- all are available in "value sized" portions. Our perception of what is a normal “portion” has expanded, along with our waistlines.

Example: Typical size in 1986 vs. Typical size in 2006
Bagel 3-inch diameter = 140 calories vs. Bagel 6-inch diameter = 350 calories

If you are out to dinner with a friend or spouse, consider splitting the entrée and dinner salad. Not only will you find it perfectly satisfying, it will be kinder to your pocket book and your waistline!
